“The year 2011 has been one of ongoing crisis, but also a time of new possibilities.
Deepening financial and debt crises and growing inequality within and between nations highlight how fragile the prospects for greater sustainable prosperity are in the year ahead.
At the same time, 2011 saw signs of potential change as well. The birth of the Arab Spring and calls for greater democracy and accountability around the world as well as the emergence of the Occupy movement urging an end to business-as-usual strategies within governments and markets seem set to continue.
Under the radar of mainstream media and debate, the United Nations took a significant step in bolstering global accountability by adopting Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the result of nearly a decade of efforts to bring greater clarity to the obligations of states to protect human rights, and of businesses to respect them.”
